The Little Baker's First Loaf
In the morning, Ana helped her grandma bake her very first loaf of bread. Grandma measured the golden flour, the warm water, and the little jar of yeast, and then they mixed everything in a big bowl with a pinch of salt. Then Ana learned to knead the dough. Kneading means pressing and folding the dough until it feels smooth and springy.
The dough was soft, and it bounced back when she pushed it. Grandma said the dough needed time to rest and grow, so they covered the bowl with a clean cloth and waited. While the bread rose, Ana set the table with cups for tea. At last the dough had doubled in size, and everyone clapped with joy.
She shaped it into a round loaf and placed it in the hot oven. The kitchen filled with a warm, toasty smell, and Ana smiled at her grandma. When the timer rang, Ana peeked through the glass door of the oven. The bread was golden brown, with a crisp crust and a soft middle.
The crust is the hard outer layer that turns brown in the heat. Grandma let the loaf cool on the wooden rack by the window, and then she cut a thick slice, and Ana spread it with creamy butter. She took one bite, and her eyes grew wide. It was the most wonderful bread she had tasted.
Ana wrapped a fresh loaf in a cloth and carried it next door. The neighbor smiled and said it smelled like a bakery. That night, she told her family about her beautiful golden loaf.
